Report and Photos by Brad Stow
This past weekend, on Sunday 18 May 2025, the songo.info team attended the 7th leg of the Western Cape BMX Provincial Points series. The event was hosted by the Zone 7 BMX club who did a great job getting the track race ready for the weekend.
The Songo team we selected to take part was made up mainly of less experienced riders and a few first-time racers. With well over 100 kids at the songo.info program we try to give as many kids the opportunity to race as possible which means not always choosing the kids who are the best or fastest riders. The team consisted of 12 kids who were accompanied by Ntandokazi, Asasipho and myself.

The kids were transported in a taxi from the Songo clubhouse, in Kayamandi, to Zone 7 BMX Track outside Durbanville and arrived at the track early Sunday morning. After a short practice session followed by a team ride by racing started. We had a few nervous kids racing for the first time who were a bit overwhelmed in the beginning, but the nerves soon settled and after their first few races the smiles started reappearing and they were all in their element.
As usual the racing was fast and furious with a few of the Songo kids performing very well and a number of our riders ended up on the podium in their respective age groups. Results aside, I felt that the Songo team really seemed to enjoy the days racing, and each kid gave their 100% whilst also showing great sportsmanship. It was a great day of racing with a few areas needing improving but this gives us something to work on as we enter the winter break. The next Provincial BMX race will only be at the end of August but Western Cape BMX will be hosting a Winter Pump track series which songo.info will attend.

I would like to thank our sponsors Ninety One and Specialized Bicycles for their continued support. Without them we woud not have been able to attend this event.
