The history of Songo
Christoph Sauser, a Swiss multiple mountain bike World Champion, had been coming to Stellenbosch, South Africa to train every summer since 1997. Susi, as he is known, has forged a deep bond with the country. When he met Songo Fipaza in 2008, he recognised an opportunity to give back to his second home.
2008
- Songo was born
- Christoph & Burry Stander race Epic together for the first time to raise money to build the BMX track.
- BMX track was completed and first group of kids joined the programme.
2009
- MTB was introduced to the Songo programme
- Christoph Sauser and Burry Stander race the Cape Epic together as team songo-specialized to promote Cycling 4 Kayamandi.
2011
- 36One-songo-Specialized Christoph & Burry win the Absa Cape Epic.
- The first two teams of Songo riders compete in and finish the Absa Cape Epic.
2012
- The first Champions Race was held with the world's best mountain bikers racing through the streets of Kayamandi in support of Songo
- Renovations of the derelict clubhouse started.
- Songo rider wins WP Spur Schools League
- 36One-songo-Specialized (Christoph Sauser & Burry Stander) win the Absa Cape Epic
- Songo riders Sipho and Azu win the first Exarro Jersey at the Absa Cape Epic and later that year represent SA at World Duathlon Champs
- Donation of vehicle & trailer
2013
- Official opening of the Clubhouse
- Christoph Sauser & Jaroslav Kulhavy race and win Cape Epic in honour of friend and trustee Burry Stander.
- Songo rider Theo represents SA at World DH Champs
- Christmas party outing to Zipzap circus & the Cheetah outreach programme
2015
- Investec Asset Management pledges 4 year support of songo.info
- Investec-songo-Specialized (Christoph Sauser & Jaroslav Kulhavy) win Cape Epic
- Introduce girl-specific programme
- Tertiary study support
- Songo rider represent SA at African XCO Champs and World Cup XCO
- Songo riders represent WP at DH SA Cup and ATU Duathlon African Cup
- Christmas party outing up Table Mountain and to Sea Point Pool.
2016
- Major Clubhouse & facilities upgrade
- Songo rider represents SA at ITU World Duathlon Champs in Spain, finishing 12th
- Songo rider Sipho races Cape Epic with Christoph Sauser and represents SA at African Continental XCO and World Champs in Czech Republic
- Computer room opened and Reading Eggs launched
- Team building weekend camp
