The new Hermanus BMX track has a spectacular backdrop.

Words & Photos by Darryn Stow.

After a few months of no racing, it was time for the first BMX race of the year at the newly built BMX track in Hermanus, on the 4th of May. Rickus and his team have been working hard on their track and it was great for the kids to experience a new track.

BMX racing in the Western Cape is still very small; but we have a calendar in place and are looking to grow the sport as much as possible this year. Having a new track in Hermanus is a massive step in the right direction and we look forward to many more exciting races there going forward.

Lined up and ready to race.

We took 9 kids from songo.info through to Hermanus. Kids from as young as 6 years old took on the challenge and we were treated to some close racing. 6 of our kids ended up on the podium in their respective age categories. Amila and Ovayo were competing for the first time and they both won their categories. Semunkele came 2nd in the 9 & 10 year old class. Amela, Lakhanya and Tsolofelo were the top 3 in the 12 & 13 year old class, in some very close racing. Most importantly though; the kids had a great day out and are already looking forward to the next race.

Big thanks to Investec, Specialized and all the sponsors that make these events possible. Also a big thanks to the Hermanus guys for having us and for all the hard work.

The next BMX event will be on the 25th of May at the songo.info track in Kayamandi, come watch the racing!
