Race day focus at the Overberg BMX Club’s track in Hermanus.

On Sunday the 8th September the songo.info team headed to Hermanus for the 9th leg of the Western Cape BMX Provincial points series. It has been a long winter with very little racing so it was great that the weather played along and we were able to race again. The team consisted of 12 Songo kids and was accompanied by Ntlantla, Mama Amelia, Mama Alu and myself, writes Bradley Stow.

We arrived at the Overberg BMX track and I registered the kids and did a few final bike and safety gear checks. Out of the 12 kids we entered for this race 8 of them will be racing SA BMX champs at the end of this month so this race was great preparation for them. After a 45min practice session followed by race briefing the songo.info crew did their team ride by and then the racing started.

Part of the race day fun for the kids is getting to spend time with the friends they’ve made through BMX.

The racing was fast and exciting with some of the riders only separated by a few centimeters when crossing the finish line. The Songo.info team performed very well with 5 of our riders ending up on the podium. The highlight of the day for me was seeing 4 year old Olulodwa line up on the start gate as the only girl in a very competitive 6 and under class. This took a lot of determination and guts and even though she was not as fast as the boys she was racing against she still gave it her absolute best and was rewarded with a medal at prizegiving.

It was a good day of racing for the songo.info team and it was great to have Ntlantla, Mama Amelia and Mama Alu helping out and supporting all the riders. It is also great to have them around as backup while I am racing.

Olulodwa took the win in the Under 6 girls category.

We only have a few weeks left until SA Champs in Cape Town so the team will be hard at work with final preparation for this big event. I am really hoping it will be a great experience for the kids and a weekend for them to remember.

A massive thank you to our sponsors, Ninety One and Specialized Bikes for their continued support. Without them none of this would have been possible.

Podium celebrations.
