On Saturday, 9th of April 2022, 10 children plus 2 coaches travelled to the Curro Meridian School in, Pinehurst, Durbanville to take part in the Primary School League Race #1. songo.info was represented by: Simamkele Magoqwana, Uviwe Tshali, Kamva Mtise, Yongama Mdletye, Isakhanya Vimba, Onathi Nogqala, Lunathi Sobekwa, Luyolo Dwamba, Ovayo Ntsenge, and Khanya Xhapha; together with the coaches Songezo luwaca and myself, Ntlantla Nonkasa. We travelled with the Specialized Bicycles bus, which was driven by Sipho Madolo.

Khanya Xhapha was the top performer of the day. Winning the sub-junior girls!

Khanya Xhapha won the Sub-Junior girls competition.

All the kids performed very well, none of them quitted. Which is very impressive for their first MTB race of the year. Along with Khanya’s win the other top results, of the day, were achieved by Ovayo Ntsenge, who finished 5th in the sprog boys.

Not much to be done as an MTB team yet this year as we’ve been focusing on BMX skills. Those proved very useful, but now we have to work more on gear changing and pacing. Along with improving fitness and the ability to generate a high speed.

BMX skills paying off on the MTB.

“The primary school events are just perfect to introduce our kids into the XCO racing format,” Sipho Madolo said. “With their BMX background there’s not much to work on, from a skills perspective, except getting comfortable on a mountain bike and knowing when to change gears.”

The Primary School team ready for action.

Thank you to the Western Cape Schools Cycling and Meurant Botha for sponsoring the entries for these events. And a big thank to Specialized Bicycles for allowing songo.info to make use of their vehicle and Biogen for always fuelling our kids in mountain bike events. We are exceptionally grateful for all your support!
