This past weekend, on Sunday 3 November, the songo.info team attended the last BMX race of the 2024 season. The race was held at the Overberg BMX track in Hermanus. We selected a fairly big team for this race with a mixture of very young riders, a few kids who have not raced much in the past, as well as some older, more experienced riders. We have also focused extra energy on getting more girls to race BMX. In total we had 12 kids from the songo program competing.
The kids, accompanied by Ntlantla, Nomvulo and Ntandokazi left the songo clubhouse in Stellenbosch early on Sunday morning and drove to Hermanus. I arrived at the track a bit earlier and sorted out the registration and collected all the race numbers. As soon as the team arrived we did some final bike and safety checks, attached their race boards and began with practice.
Racing started at 10.30am and it was fast and furious. Overberg BMX club has put a lot of time and effort into this event and it is great to see that BMX is steadily growing in the Western Cape. The racing was tight and the songo team performed extremely well with a number of our kids getting onto the podium. Once again the team showed great support for one another and behaved well.
It has been a long season of racing and we are looking forward to some time off but we will definitely be ready early next year when the 2025 BMX race season starts again. A big thank you to our sponsors, Ninety One and Specialized Bicycles for their continued support. Without them none of this would have been possible.
