BMX Racing action from Zone 7.
On Sunday the 2nd of February, the songo.info team headed through to Zone 7 BMX track just outside Durbanville for the first race of the 2025 season. It had been a long break from racing for the kids and they were all keen to get back on to the track again. I arrived at the track early in the morning to register the kids and collect race numbers, writes Brad Stow. The kids then arrived with the taxi and after a few final bike and safety checks we all headed on to the track for official practice.
The songo.info team was represented by ten kids from the program and accompanied by Nomvulo and Ntandokazi who helped with meals and watched over the kids while I was racing. The team we chose for this race was a combination of experienced racers and kids who had only raced a few times before. The Zone 7 track is one of the more technical tracks in the Western Cape so we decided to only take the slightly older kids. We will give the younger kids a chance at the next race.
“The Zone 7 track is one of the more technical tracks in the Western Cape so we decided to only take the slightly older kids.,” Brad Stow explained.
After practice we all attended riders briefing and did our team ride by and then racing got underway. The opening race of the season often highlights areas that we can work on and also shows who has been training hard throughout the December holiday period. The racing was exciting with some very close finishes. The songo.info team had a few good results on the day but there are areas where we can definitely improve. The level of BMX racing is getting higher every year, particularly in the Western Cape, so the songo team will try and progress at least as quickly but at the same time enjoy racing. One of our goals is to expose as many kids from Kayamandi to BMX racing as possible and at the same time allow them the opportunity to travel around South Africa.
All in all I was very proud of the way the songo.info team performed on the track as well as the sportsmanship and determination shown. I am looking forward to the rest of the 2025 season and have high hopes for the kids. Our next BMX event is on the 16 February at the Kraaifontein BMX Track.
Thank you to our sponsors Ninety One and Specialized Bikes for their continued support. Without them none of this would have been possible.
