Wrap up of the 2012 Absa Cape Epic

13 Apr 2012

All the riders and supporters of the 2012 Absa will no doubt agree that the 2012 Absa Cape Epic was testing and trying, true to the Cape Epic ethos but this year with the added dimension of the weather. Never before did we see the pro's in such a state at the of a stage as at the end of Stage 5 in the horrific weather. As for the rest of the riders, the utmost respect goes those who struggled through cold and muddy conditions.

Through the all the challenges that the Absa Cape Epic had in store this year, the songo riders demonstrated their tenacity and mental toughness as the teams came out on top. After 6 straight days of wearing the leader's jersey, the roaring crowds, fans and supporters welcomed home the final stage 7 winners, Christoph Sauser and Burry Stander. The last day was most certainly not a casual cruise home! Many of the teams were gunning for the last opportunity of winning a stage on the 2012 Epic. It was the 2012 Epic champions that took the win followed closely by Topeak Ergon Racing and the SONGO-SPECIALIZED team of Max Knox and Kohei Yamamoto.  The sprint to end saw Kohei Yamamoto give it his all and really show his sprinting skills but the strong legs of Alban Lakata and his partner Robert Mennen saw them take 2nd position and SONGO-SPECIALIZED 3rd place! There was huge excitement in the songo.info camp to see all our champions on the podium for the final stage of 2012 Absa Cape Epic.

There was great excitement at the final award ceremony seeing 36ONE-SONGO-SPECIALIZED take the overall trophy for the 2012 Absa Cape Epic, taking their winning streak to 2 years in a row. We are exceptionally proud of these athletes who race for songo.info and create this unique opportunity to raise the funds to sustain the songo.info charity.

We don't underestimate the hard work from Kohei Yamamoto and Max Knox who supported Christoph and Burry in this year's epic event. There is also a very big team that works behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly from Benno Willet and Dylan van der Merwe, who take care of the bikes, to Gavin and Pieter who look after the athletes to Helen Hugo who feeds the hungry tummies! We are so grateful for all the hard work from everyone.

Huge congratulations goes to our Exxaro Teams of Sipho Mandolo and Azukile Simayile, and Sivuyile Kepelele and Thando Klass who did exceptionally well in the Epic. Our boys had their eyes on the Exxaro Development jersey with the goal of standing on the podium with Christoph Sauser and Burry Stander. Much like their mentors, Sipho and Azu took the jersey from the get-go and saw it through all the way to the final podium in Lourensford. Svig and Thando were in the running for 3rd position until Stage 5 when the wet and muddy conditions proved taxing on their bikes. With lots of time spent with Willie and his team in the Tech Zone, they eventually managed to get through the course and to the finish line with 30mins to spare, thanks to an extended cut-off. But this never detered these guys and they were back riding with a vengence on day 6 and 7!

Congratulations to the RSAWEB-SONGO.INFO team of Nic Lamond and Carl Pasio who did exceptionally well finishing 23rd in their category and 25th overall. It was so fantastic to see all the songo.info teams fly!

But everyone who completed the 2012 deserves the hugest congratulations. It was a tough course and hectic weather conditions and no doubt tested everyone's limits.

We look forward to seeing you back next year for the 10th anniversary of the Absa Cape Epic!
