THE WP SPUR SCHOOLS MTB LEAGUE #1

13 Jun 2018

Race report by: Sipho Madolo, Sport Programme Manager

The Southey Vines Cycle Park in Somerset West hosted the first round of The Spur Schools MTB League this past weekend. The bad weather didn’t make any difference to attendance with more than 700 riders racing their hearts out in the rain! The kids showed us that when you love and enjoy riding you accept no excuse not to ride.

This Spur Schools MTB League is definitely our kid’s main and favourite series of the year and it was great to see them tackling the muddy conditions with guts and determination. We had a team of 10 riders taking part in this event, 3 girls and 7 boys: 4 Sprogs, 3 Sub Juniors, 2 Youth and one Junior.

Sprogs

All three boys had an awesome race. Lakhanya finished 15th, Likho 17th and Amila 8th. They absolutely gave me a reason to run around the course cheering for them. There’s still  room for improvement for the next one and I'm really looking foward to seen them racing again soon.

Sub-Juniors

We had Milani, Liyema and Munde racing in this category. It was Munde and Liyema's first Spur league race and they really enjoyed it. Milani had a very successful day out - even though she had a crash at the start she showed true determination and raced to finish 2nd in her age group and 5th overall.

Youth and Juniors

Mzwandile and Asabonga had their best race so far this year and was cool to see how happy they were after the race. Our junior Bukho, was positioned within the top 10 for most of the race but unfortunately with few mistakes, he moved him back in the field (but still within the top 20!). With it being his first year as a junior, mistakes are to be expected but he is doing really well and with good power and speed all he needs to do is take the lessons and build on it.

Thanks to everyone who make days like these possible for the kids and to everyone for the cheering out on the course - the spirit was awesome. See you all at the next event at Bloemendal.
