Stage 2 Robertson - rain, mud & mechanicals.

25 Mar 2014

Although there was promise of a very “pleasant, unlike Absa Cape Epic day” stage 2 turned out to be the very opposite, with the rain turning the day into carnage for bikes and bodies.

Sip & Azu had a tough day out today although this was a shared fate with many other teams. A crash & broken shifter had them fighting the conditions & saw them losing some time in the overall GC lead but they remain proud wearers of the Exxaro jersey starting stage 3 with a lead of just under 9 minutes. Well done Azu & Sip! It was particularly great to see them get up onto stage tonight during the lead up to the awards ceremony and hear them talk so eloquently about their dreams, goals, aspirations and what they love about cycling. Such great role models for the children in the songo.info program and such great ambassadors!

After stage 1, we were hoping that there would be a smooth run in todays stage for Christoph & Franti but once again - this is stage racing and smooth sailing was not to be. An issue with the brake pad spring jamming the rotor resulted in the hard fought minutes earned the day before falling away. Luckily the amazing teamwork of the support teams RECM and Specialized ensured that the damage was limited.

Going into stage 3 tomorrow, with Susi & Franti placed in 6th position roughly 11 mins behind the Bulls, it’s important to remember that anything can happen at the Absa Cape Epic!

Tomorrow is going to be a hard day out again for the riders but spare a thought for the support crew and mechanics that are madly trying to piece back together wounded bikes to ensure that they are in mint racing condition tomorrow.
