Spurs Schools Mountain Biking League

09 Oct 2011

6 kids were afforded a fantastic opportunity to fly in an airplane and head to Gauteng to take part in the Spur Schools National Mountain Biking event to race against several schools across South Africa. We felt very privilege to be one of the 65 schools represented and over 230 kids who came to race.

It was exceptional to see the level of mountain biking riding and the skills that are emerging from South Africa's school children.

The event provides amazing opportunities for the scholars to participate in races that are tailored for their needs as youngsters managing distance, while enabling them to grow and develop the skills competing against peers.

We were so proud of our junior men Luyanda and Azukile who came 20 and 21st in their category. Luyolo was not far behind them. Abongile, only 13 and relatively new to mountain biking from BMX, was strong and had a great race. Songezo, 14, raced heart and soul and definitely shows the promise and aptitude of a good mountain biker. Zola, our champion BMX racer, enjoyed the weekend's activities but still holds BMX as his first passion!

The weekend was so well organised from the minute we were fetched at Lansaria airport through to full day of inter-school's racing on Saturday followed by an awards dinner evening, interprovincials on Sunday, and finally making our way back to the airport in the early afternoon.

The Spur Schools Mtb League has grown from strength to strength cultivating strong talented young mountain bike riders. We look foward to taking part in the next season's events.

Big thank you to Meurant from Amarider and Etienne from Spur.
