Spur High Schools Schools Mountain Bike League event #2: Montana, Worcester.

10 Aug 2017

Race report by Sipho Madolo. Program Sport Manager.

The second round of the SPUR HIGH SCHOOL MTB LEAGUE  was held this past weekend and it was definitely one of the best races our kids have ever had. After the first event, a few weeks ago, we knew what we needed to work on and we focused on that. The kids don't have much time in the afternoons to train, so we changed their training format to be shorter with high intensity and a lot of fun thrown in.

The kids raced their hearts out and it was cool to see them improve with each race, working towards achieving their goals.  We had 10 kids that took part in the race - 4 girls and 7 boys -  and each and everyone of them gave 100%! I think that they even surprised themselves how well they raced.

Our U/14s girls were a bit unlucky -  with all the changes in the age groups between primary and high schools we ended up entering them into the wrong category! (our bad!!)  I only picked up our error after the race so even though our 2 girls, Asabonga and Akhona finished 2nd and 3rd , they were unfortunately disqualified. I felt so bad for them as they were really disappointed as they had ridden so hard that I decided to hold our own prize giving for them when we got back home to the clubhouse

                                         Informal prize giving

All our kids raced well but 2 other kids who really stepped up were Zizo and Star. Zizo also unfortunately raced in the wrong category, but for him, he was racing the older kids so his 8th position showed massive effort and was very impressive. Star had his best race and even with a bad seeding and a big crash on the second lap, he gave his all!

In action

Well done to all our kids competing - we are so proud of you! The next event will be held on the 26th August in Durbanville and we will definitely have more kids racing and entered into the correct age groups! :-)

Thanks to Amarider and to all the supporters and sponsors for making every outing and race possible for the kids.
