SONGO.INFO BMX RACE REPORT

06 Sep 2017

Race report by: Darryn James Stow, BMX coach

After a few months of winter, it was time to host the first race of the year at the Songo.info track in Kayamandi. The last few months have been very productive for us at the BMX Track. We were fortunate enough to get a digger in for a day in July, and since then its been flat out getting ready for race day.

BMX racing in the Western Cape is still very small compared to Durban and Johannesburg. We don't have any National standard tracks in the Cape so we are quite limited with hosting races. We are however planning to have a few more events in the coming months and hopefully we can build some momentum going forward.

Race Day was here and we were greeted with one of the most beautiful Spring days imaginable. The Songo.info staff, kids, parents and the community started arriving around 7AM in anticipation for the race. We were joined by Velokhaya and the racing was intense. Kids from as young as 7years old took on the challenge and we were treated to some close racing. The kids had a great day and the community enjoyed watching the action.

Ouch!

The racing was fierce and there some spectacular tumbles but luckily no one was hurt. Photo credit: Darryn Stow

We feel that even with the relatively small turnout, the event was a success. For some of the riders, this was their first time competing in a BMX race and they learnt some valuable lessons. To race on their home track after all the hard work getting it ready, made the day even more special. We hope that this event has sparked interest in BMX racing again and the next one can be even better.
