SA XCO Cup #1 - Mankele in Nelspruit 28-31 Jan

01 Mar 2016

The songo.info team (Sipho Madolo, Darryn Stow and myself) arrived at the Mbombela Holiday Resort in Nelspruit, which is just 12Km away from the Mankele race course, on Thursday afternoon. We went to pick up our registration info on Friday morning, and afterwards we checked out the course. It looked fine but I was a bit worried about the race. I was my first time riding a SA XCO CUP and my first time as an elite rider. I knew that it was going to be hard, but I just kept telling myself that I must try to race as hard as I can.

THE RACE DAY

I woke up in the morning at 08:00am, we went  for breakfast and finish around 09:00. I went back to my   room and started to check if everything is ready for the race. At 12:00pm I ate my lunch and started to get ready for the race, which started at 14:00pm. I rode the 12 km from our hotel to the start and arrived 30min before the start. At the start line I was in the second line from the back. I knew that I would have to push really hard in order to get to the top 10. The race started and in the first lap out of eight I was in top 20 going to the second lap. In the second lap I unfortunately got a puncture that I fixed as quickly as I could and kept on riding, working hard to get closer to the top 15. In the 4th lap I got a side cut on my back wheel and run out of sealant that forced me to pull out, and I ended up being in the top 38th.
