Paarl Rotary Backsberg MTB race report

28 Aug 2017

Race report by: Sipho Madolo, Sport program manager.

On sunday 20th Aug, we took some of our BMX kids to one of our local events – The Paarl Rotary Backsberg MTB race. This event is a really great event for the family with 4km, 15km and 45km route options.  We decided that the 4km event would be the perfect event for 11 of our  BMX kids to take part in.

As our BMX kids haven’t been to many MTB races, I thought that the 4km route would be the perfect distance to challenge them but I was wrong, they finished so quickly and still full of energy. I think next time I’ll definitely sign them up for the longer distance to challenge them a little more.

 Lining up

While the event is a relaxed family event our kids raced out hard from the gun – their competitive spirit pushing them to race for a win. Our BMX kids don't do that much racing as BMX is no longer that big in the Western Cape so we have been introducing them to mountain bike racing and the different events certainly keep them motivated and having fun!

We have split our BMX program into two groups where we have kids who are consistently doing THE SPUR MTB LEAGUE and the others doing the family ride events and other fun outings - this approach has been working really well.

 4km Kids Race

I was really proud of how our kids went all out managing to take the top 5 positions! The racing spirit was really high and Theo Ngubane  (an older member in our program who raced Cape Epic this year) who rode with them to make sure they were ok, had to put in much more effort than he was expecting, in order to keep up.

Huge thanks to Loyiso and Theo  coming to the event to support  and help the kids. They worked very hard, preparing Lunch, packing bikes and helping with the registration as part of their contribution back to program. Thanks guys.

At the finish

Prince, our new Program Manager also joined us at the event – this was his 2nd bike race he has ever attended and here's what he had to say about the experience …..

"All I can say is that it was an great experience to ride with the kids at an event for the first time in my life, the energy and  enthusiasm of the environment was just awesome.  The race was a bit quicker than I expected though and I was dead tired after 10 minutes,  there was one 6-7year old boy who was so happy when he overtook me, but I didn’t mind it was just great to do my first event.

The songo crew all had a similar racing mind-set and they didn’t care if it was a fun race or not , they were racing to come first. The kids were very happy to race with me – they knew that I didn’t stand a chance against them. I really enjoyed the event and everything that went down in Paarl.”

Thanks to the whole team and to everyone involved for making this possible for the kids!
