BMX Race

October was a busy month with the lead up to Wines Whales, STBB MTB race, SA BMX Champs & our own BMX races held in Kayamandi. In addition there was a lot of work going on in and around the clubhouse that kept us all busy and out of trouble.

Girl's clinic:

The month kicked off with a dedicated girls skills clinic held by Jo Dobinson from Biking in the Bosch. On a wet and rainy Thursday, 3 of our girls joined Jo in Jonkershoek for a dedicated 2hr skills session. Sipho has been working extremely hard with the girls and their skills and fitness have improved dramatically. In addition to Sipho's hard work we have a volunteer, Bernadette who also takes the girls out on rides every Wed afternoons. We are dedicated to increasing the number of girls riding and with focused attention the girl's arm of the program will no doubt grow from strength to strength.

BMX Race:

With the local BMX scene being so quiet, we have decided to hold our own BMX races regularly to not only give our kids the opportunity to race but to have a fun event to work towards and look forward to. Our first BMX race held on Heritage day was a great success with fantastic support shown from the kid's parents. Our second BMX race was held on the 11 Oct, the kids raced fiercely and the podium finishers wore their medals with pride. Although the 2nd race was poorly attended from outside clubs, we are hoping that our next BMX race scheduled for the 22th November will be better attended. Please feel free to join us for a fun morning of riding, entry is free and racing starts at 9am. See FB for further details.

STTB 2Keep a Breast MTB race:

STBB generously donated 17 entries to us so we had a full team competing with entries spanning across the 60km, 45, 35km & 15kms. There was a great variety of riding with all the kids not only holding their own but also enjoying the day out. We are particularly proud of the girls in the program who have been training up a storm and you can definitely see the improvement in confidence, skills & fitness.

BMX Nationals:

On the 24th October, coach Darryn Stow & Songo traveled up to Durban for BMX SA Champs and UCI African Champs with 4 of the kids, Kamva, Lakhanya, Sifiso & Sihle. In the lead up to nationals Darryn worked extremely hard getting the kids ready for the big track and strong competition that they would face at Nationals. Particularly valuable was a practice session at the Kayalitsha track, which gave the kids the opportunity to practice with a start gate as well as on a bigger, more challenging track. All in all, it was a very successful trip with all the kids racing their hearts out and loving the experience. Sifiso & Kamva managed to make it through to the finals of the SA Championships and raced hard to a very respectful 5th & 6th position. At the UCI African Champs on the Sunday, our kids again did themselves and us proud with great performances in very tough conditions. Again Kamva made it through to the finals and rode like a champ to finish off in 5th position overall. For more about the kid's trip to SA Champs - see Darryn's race report on our home page.

2014 FNB Wines2Whales:

The FNB W2W is without a doubt one of the best events in the country and one of our favourite events on the calendar - the top class route, race village and organization by a host of passionate individuals drives this race to continually improve and impress those lucky enough to snatch up a highly sought after entry.

This year, we again ran our Ride with a Champ initiative, where we sold the opportunity to ride the W2W Race with one of our pro / celeb supporters. The package included accommodation, cycling kit, massages, meals and a special goodie bag including all sorts of items including an awesome Specialized Cap, Tee's and delicious Meerendal wine to enjoy.

The weekend was a fantastic success, filled with great racing, lots of laughter and camaraderie and a healthy dose competitiveness. We are extremely lucky to have the most fantastic supporters and will look back on the W2W 2014 fondly where great times were had and new & long lasting friendships were formed.

A huge thank you to the following rock stars for their fantastic support and for making it all so special:

  • Christoph Sauser & Konny Looser - congrats on your fantastic win!
  • Erik Kleinhans & Sipho Madolo
  • Corne Krige & Paul Newman
  • David Wright & Jan Joubert

A huge thanks also needs to go to the Stillwater Sports team for the donated entries and all the support they give us. Not only does this team know how to put on a world-class event but also they give back generously whilst doing so.

Lastly, a heartfelt thanks to all who supported us during the race in purchasing the Specialized caps, I ride 4 Burry Tees and water bottles as well as those who donated kit and spares at registration. For those who were not at the event and are interested in still purchasing any of the items - they will be available via our online store soon.

Coming Up:

With the end of the year looming, our kids are working hard in preparation of year-end exams and are looking forward to the Christmas holidays.

Don't forget about the BMX race we are holding at our track on the 22nd November, bring the kids and family and come join in the fun.

We will keep you posted once we have finalised the plans & dates but if you would like to join us or contribute in any way please give us a shout.
