Eliminator series - Event 1 race report

15 May 2017

Race report by Sipho Madolo: Sport programme manager

The first round of the WC Eliminator Series took place at Zevenwacht Wine Estate yesterday with a flat but hard course. We had 10 of our BMX kids taking part in this type of event for the first time. With BMX not being so big in the Western Cape anymore, it forces us to look at different events that our BMX kids can do which fits with their riding and bike handling skills. Our selected kids competed across the U10, U12 and U14 categories with some racing on their BMX bikes and others on some of our small MTB bikes.

The Eliminator format is not too different from the bmx racing, it’s just a bit longer with more pedaling needed but our kids really enjoyed it and raced their hearts out.

Zizo rode brilliantly and won all his U14 runs except the final because of a few small.  Another top performer was Milani who finished 3rd in girls U12 – this was pretty special as she was racing on a BMX bike. All the rest our kids had a great time with all of them making the semi finals. They are all super motivated to practice and now that they have a little more experience they are looking forward to the second and final round on the 28th May.

Huge thanks to Kaya, Loyiso, Jersey and Aphiwe for coming along and helping me with packing bikes, preparing lunch packs and getting the kids ready for the start – the kids really appreciated the support and cheering.
