An inspiring story about the 2012 Argus Cycle Tour

14 Mar 2012

16 very excited kids were packed into the new Opel Vivaro minibus early on Sunday morning as a convoy of Songo Fipaza and his brother drove through to Cape Town to bring all the young men to the start of the Cape Argus. As they young guys were lining up in the chutes for the start of their race, Christoph and his team including Oli Munnik and Erik Kleinhans were charging full steam ahead on the course with the rest of the Elite bunch.

It turned out to be an exciting morning of Elite racing as a small group broke away at the top of Chappies, with Christoph a little furthe back in the bunch. A chase ensued with a few guys and pretty soon Christoph was seen in the leading bunch again charging up Suikerbossie in their big blade!

It was so exciting to see the songo colours leading the front of the Cape Argus and the incredible TV coverage we got for the event. Congratulations to Christoph on such a fantastic achievement!

Meantime at the back to of the race about 12 of the boys were all riding together. Under the guidance of Songo, the older boys, our very experienced riders who are super fit and super strong ahead of the Absa Cape Epic, were riding closely and keeping a watchful eye on the younger riders who were taking part in the event for the first time or with little experience. These older guys, including Azukile, Sipho and Sivuyile, could easily have sailed around the course in under 3.30 but instead they chose to battle the heat and tap into immense patience as they coached our younger riders through their audacious goal! We are so proud of the incredible example they have set.

It was a fairly long and hot day out for most of the guys but at the end of the day there were big smiles for their achievement and the comforts of food and nutrition from Rehidrat who hosted us all in their tent. Dan Zagoria organised timing chips for 10 of the riders so they can now look forward to proper timing and better seedings for the next events. This is going to be great inspiration for many of them!

The first question from all of them when they finished was "How did Christoph do?" followed by a big proud grin and many "wow's" as I told them he finished 6th overall.

Thank you so much to the Cycle Tour Trust for the opportunity to bring the guys from Kayamandi out to race in such a prestigious event, as well as Rehidrat for taking such great care of the riders as they finished, and Reeds for our new snazzy vehicle that got everyone to the race and back home again!
