An Epic Start to an Epic Event

25 Mar 2012

We are so proud to have several athletes either from songo.info or riding for songo in the 2012 Absa Cape Epic.

Of course there is our headline team 36ONE-SONGO-SPECIALIZED, Christoph Sauser and Burry Stander ,and joining the pro team this year is the 2nd SONGO-SPECIALIZED team of Max Knox and the Asian XCO Champ Kohei Yamamoto.

The pro teams were off to a flying start charging around the technical and hilly course of Meerendal but, as Burry said afterwards, with the most amazing views of Table Mountain in one direction and Franshoek mountains in the other direction.

One hour seemed to fly by as the songo kids sat glued to the TV screen as we watched the action unfold on the course. Max Knox and Kohei were blazing the trails, breaking times on several virtual checkpoints, only to be followed by all the action with Christoph and Burry. We were so proud of such fantastic riding from all the teams!

Burry and Susi won the stage with a 13 sec lead and Max and Kohei followed in 4th position just 12 secs behind 3rd position.

And then there was the outstanding result from Nic Lamond and Carl Pasio riding in the RSAWEB-SONGO.INFO team. They were the 8th African team home and 21 mens team overall. Outstanding result from them!

The highlight of the day was the exceptional performance of our songo.info team riding as part of the Exxaro Academy, team no. 9, Azukile Simayile and Sipho Madolo who finished 40th mens team in a time of 1.33.59. This result also put them as the 1st development team!

When we attend the Absa Cape Epic media launch around August last year and first heard about the Exxaro Jersey, Sipho told me that his dream was to stand on the stage at the 2012 Absa Cape Epic alongside his mentors Burry Stander and Christoph Sauser. So we printed out the Outlook calendar from September 2011 to March 2012 and worked out a training program for him and Azu. Of course they had lots of input from Christoph and Nic who teach them riding and training techniques and offer great support. We were all super proud to see the boys achieve their dream at the Prologue.
