2015 Andorra UCI Mountain Bike World Championships

22 Sep 2015

Representing Southouth Africa in Andorra was something huge, the whole of   South Africa was definitely behind us! I was so proud to be part of the SA team, and it actually inspired me personally to stay hungry! Thanks to Cycling South Africa for the big opportunity.

We arrived in Andorra Spain on Monday 24th of August, the weather was good. The camaraderie and energy within the team throughout the week leading to the race was a revelation.

The course was nice and technical with steep short climbs. I felt so comfortable on it after practising for few days, with Christoph showing me the lines and where to push really hard.  But unfortunately, a few days before the race it started raining and the course was changing by the minute. The excitement peaked up when I started to receive the good luck messages from around the world.

Race day: When we set off the track was very different from when we trained on it the day before. The weather was good again. It felt like  we are at home except the 2000 meters above the sea level. My realistic goal for the race was to finish the race without getting laped and move up on the ranking. I started right at the back and there was more than 115 riders on the same start line. That didn't really bother me, as I have made my way up to the front on the SA racing over the past two years so I understand that I have to do the same on the international level. The passing was the serious struggle on the first lap as i was stuck at the back the whole first lap, running instead or riding on the technical sections and climbs because there are slow rider's who just stuck in front and you can't do anything but to jump off the bike and run. I ended up finishing 95th and am happy with it as it was my first international race.

My specialized expert WC Epic was perfect for the course, and Fast trak control 29x2.0 was a good choice. Thanks at Specialised Bicycles South Africa  for the great support and also thanks to the songo.info family for all the work that they put together for my racing.

Big thanks to @cyclingsouthafrica for the great opportunity and to everyone for the support! @supacaz @specialzedZA @sauserwind @cycling_sa @biogenZA @songo.info @bmtbikeshop
