2013 Absa Cape Epic Prologue

17 Mar 2013

There is no doubt that this year's Absa Cape Epic is a tough undertaking, not only for the grueling 8 days of riding but also for the tough emotional journey for the Stander family, the Specialized team, the many friends and supporters of Burry Stander; not least, Christoph Sauser, who for the first time in 4 years will be riding with a new partner, Jaroslav Kulhavy. This time in memory of Burry Stander.

There is no doubt that seeing Christoph Sauser and Jaroslav Kulhavy emerge today wearing Burry Stander's South African Champion cycling kit tugged on the heart stings and left a lump in the throat for many. It's still tough to process that there is no Burry here. One thing is for sure, these two guys are racing heads, hearts, legs; with everything they have got in the name of their friend, Burry Stander.

Today's performance was just incredible. From the minute they left the starting blocks the two world champions raced full throttle across the gruelling 23km course. By timepoint 2 they had a 1 minute lead on their main competitors in the Prologue stage, Florian Vogel and Nino Shurter. In a few kilometers they caught the 2 riders, until Vogel had an unfortunate tumble and ended up with a broken seat.

Jaroslav was leading the duo home when the crossed the finished line in a mere 55minutes. Remarkable. Crowds were going crazy for this exceptional team. Their second team showed they were on top form as well finishing in 7th place overall. Well done Max Knox and Kohei Yamamoto.

We are also super proud of our Exxaro team of Sipho Madolo and Azukile Simayile who finished 32nd overall, winning the Exxaro  Development jersey and Barti Bucher and Heinz Zorweg, our Grand Master's category in the colours!

Starting Day 1 of the Epic our songo teams are in the leading jerseys for the Elite, Exxaro Development and Grand Masters Jersey's. What a start to the day!

We wish all our riders a fantastic day 1. We know it will be tough out there but you have all of us rooting for you and sending out our support. Best of luck to all that are rider!
