2011 Western Province BMX Championships

18 Dec 2011

Friday morning turned out to be a glorious day of perfect summer sunshine, perfect for the day of racing to be held at the Velokhaya track in Khayelitsha. Western Province BMX Champs is traditionally held every 16 December at Velokhaya, and where this year we were treated to a surprise visit from the legendary Tour de France commentator, Phil Liggett. It was incredible to have the iconic voice of the Tour de France commentate for the final heats of the WP Champs and spend time chatting to and encouraging the children.

We are exceptionally proud of all our kids including Zola, who finished 2nd and Abongile who finished 3rd in the 13-14 age category. Songezo was flying through his heat in the lead until he crashed in the final corner. The trials and tribulations of BMX racing!!

It was wonderful to finally see the kids racing in the newly acquired BMX full face helmets - one of the big achievements for the program for the year.

All in all it was a great end to a fantastic year of racing and we all look forward to a good break and resuming training and racing again the new year.

Congratulations to all the teams that participated including Velokhaya and Genesis. Thank you so much to Kevin for all his organisation of BMX riding and racing in the Western Province, we look forward to another fun year next year.
