This past weekend Sipho, Ntlantla and Mama Amelia and Brad Stow accompanied 10 kids to the 6th leg of the provincial BMX series which took place at the Overberg BMX Club in Hermanus. The fairly long drive from Stellenbosch to Hermanus was made comfortable and safe for the team thanks to Specialized and Toyota giving us the use of their Quantam for the weekend.
songo.info was represented by the following riders: Mihlali Stuurman, Ovayo Ntsege, Uviwe Tshali, Kanya Xhapa, Mivuyo Mndini, Alunamida Mathafeni, Sithembiso Juju Mbikahlobo, Tsholofelo Letlola, Luminathi Nkoko, Mihlali Nyembezi and Ntlakanipho Zaphela.
Included in this group were two kids from the songo.info Tots program and it was amazing to see these very young kids (4 years old) race and have so much fun on a national level BMX track, with no parents or family by their side, 150kms away from their homes!
All the kids rode well and for me it’s great to see them improving with each race. It is also good to see that they are humble in defeat but also handle success in a sporting manner.
The top performer on the day was Ovayo Ntsege who once again made it onto the podium in one of the most competitive age groups of the day. His racing was very consistent and his confidence is growing week by week. I am looking forward to seeing him race in the future and I am hoping he keeps improving his skills while still having fun on the bike.
All in all it was a successful weekend for the Songo team. We are continuously learning from our mistakes and growing as a team while having fun in the process.
There is a winter break before the next provincial BMX race but in the interim Western Province BMX will be running a fun winter series. Songo will attend a few of these events but our focus will shift towards Mountain Bike events such as the Schools MTB series and the Provincial XCO series.
A very big thank you to our sponsors Specialized bikes and NinetyOne who made this weekend possible. Their support is greatly appreciated!
