In order to make cycling less intimidating and to address the specific needs of the girls, we have introduced a girls specific program aimed at getting more girls riding and benefiting from what the program has to offer.
We focus on empowering the girls involved in the program through cycling, promoting a healthy lifestyle and reinforcing the positive effects of strong female bonds and role models in a fun environment.
Allocated girls only time on the BMX track where the girls are able to ride without the fear of being jostled and bumped by the boys. Whether there is 1 or 5 girls on the track this time is strictly for the girls with coach Darryn being available to give dedicated coaching.
Weekly MTB ride:
Weekly girls only rides are taken by Sipho Madolo who has risen up through the program and continues to inspire the kids as well as giving back to the program. The focus of this session is for the girls to gain confidence and basic skills on a bike in a fun environment.
Monthly Skills clinic:
Led by Specialized Women's ambassador & owner of Biking in the Bosch, Joanna Dobinson - these sessions are aimed at improving the girls basic bike handling skills in a non-intimidating, fun environment. For more information on Biking in the Bosch, please visit www.bikinginthebosch.co.za.
Monthly Outride with Cherise Stander & Friends:
Roughly once a month Professional MTB athlete and songo.info trustee Cherise Stander takes the girls out for a social ride. This ride is open to female riders of all ages in & outside of the program, with the aim being to socialise with other female riders, encouraging a support network and providing mentorship while enjoying the outdoors & local trails together. The rides start & end at Ride In Cafe, Stellenbosch, with coffee & muffins wrapping up the outing. Dates & times are posted on the songo.info Facebook wall & posted as an upcoming event.
