The track is now complete - it has been “rolled” and is ready to rock! Stellenbosch has had some bad weather forecasted over the weekend, so we will probably only be able to get out there next week and give the track a go.

Erica Green, the project manager, and her team have been doing a fantastic job onsite. Shipment of 15 MONGOOSE MENACE BMX bikes from Omnico - these are not racing bikes, but bikes on which the first group of kids will learn to ride on-were recived.

Today was personal for many reasons Personal for Susi’s mum, Benno, the team and I. Corina(Susi’s mum) has been there forever, Benno has been his mechanic since 2003 and Susi has been a great friend to me since 1999. We have seen the marathon world championship, two world cup overall titles, the thirteen world cup wins, but until today no world cross country win, something that has eluded Susi, but a title he truly deserved. The Songo.info Charity initiative was birthed with Christoph Sauser’s will to ride the 2008 Absa Cape Epic for a charitable cause. He’s heart has been to give back to South Africa, to his winter training base town of Stellenbosch, and more directly to the community of Kayamandi. (more…)

They told me that we can start biulding the BMX track now for the kids of Kayamandi.

Thank-you to the whole songo.info team for their hard work, effort and time that was put into getting the land.

On the 15th of May the JAG Sports & Education Foundation hosted their Year in Review. The function was a great success all around, but especially with regards to the items that were auctioned off for the songo.info bmx project. Marco Carvalho’s painting, which he donated to the project, was auctioned off for R10 000.00 to Karl Westvig.

The Specialized Rockhopper Mountain Bike and the Yellow Cape Epic Leader Jersey, signed by Christoph Sauser was auctioned off to Gerard Holden for R20 000.00.

The JAG Foundation is now officially one year old! They have done tremendous work in the last year and only seem to be reaching more and more kids through their sporting and education programs.

As far as construction goes, we are in the final throws of getting municipal permissions. Songo is now working full time and putting his energy into getting the permission to use the land.

We are finally nearing the end of the Public Participation Process! Due to the fact that our BMX track is ear marked to be built on public, municipal land, we have had to go through a 21 day process whereby the public of Stellenbosch decides if they are satisfied with a BMX track going up on the land.

Not known for his starts, Susi was a little out of the action in the opening laps, but became a feature when the real racing commenced. A bunch containing all of the major contenders including Absalon, Hermida, Schurter & Vogel were stuck together like glue until Absalon made his decisive move on the single track through the forests.
