Decision Time

February 7th, 2008 by Ruth

Yesterday, was an important decision making day in the life of the songo.info project. I attended two meetings with certain role players if this project. Many decisions had to be made, both meetings ended positively.

The first meeting consisted of four of the five role players, Kevin Vermaak (ABSA Cape Epic), Elana Meyer (JAG) and myself met to discuss in detail, the different aspects of the project. It is amazing to see the energy each role player brings to the table, and to see how four people from polar-opposite backgrounds come together for one cause. One dream.

Songo.info has decided on a slogan for how we are going to raise funds to build the best Kayamandi BMX track: BUY KILOMETERS BUILD BMX TRACK. Five words, Five colours, five role players, making one dream possible. Its real, its raw, its tangible, it captures the essence of what we are doing.

The basic thought of just building a bmx track has evolved into something far beyond just the track. Through songo.info’s riding ambassadors, Christoph Sauser and Burry Stander, songo.info are building a ‘bmx trust’ - something that will be sustainable for years to come. Not only do we want to give the children of Kayamandi a great track, but we hope to raise enough revenue and awareness to give them bikes, helmets, skills clinics, mechanic clinics and hopefully the chance for them to compete at national competitions.

The five roles players of this project have big hearts and big dreams and we fully believe that it is possible to reach our goal of raising R1 000 000.00 for this project. We will be launching our ‘buy kilometres’ campaign to make this dream a reality in the next few days.

The second meeting was with the representatives of the Sports Counsil for Kayamandi. Erica Green, Songo Fipaza, Elana Meyer (JAG) and two expert BMX project mangers joined us to convince the representatives that we need land in Kayamandi for our songo.info BMX trust. In South Africa there are processes that one has to follow in order for local municipalities to co-operate. Hence we had to start at the very bottom. Once we get the approval of Kayamandi’s Sports Council, we can then move onto the next level and get the final go-ahead from the Stellenbosch Municipality. But without Kayamandi’s Sports Council’s approval we are nowhere. The meeting was a positive one, and it seems as thought we are making progress in the most important area-getting the land-use approval.
